marvin gaye - what’s going on
this album is another on my “essential listening” list… not only is it a brilliantly written and very significant concept album that brought awareness to real issues and injustices happening the time it was released, but it also holds a lot of sentimental value for me.
i listened to this album for the first time with my brother, myles. then, when i got my record player, he gave me his copy of the record with a small note inside. now this is the album that always reminds me of him. and i just gotta say, i am so so grateful for his musical influence in my life.
now, if you’re gonna give it a listen, i highly recommend giving it some attention the first time around. before myles played it for me, he gave me some historical context about the time it was written and why it was written. this really made a difference in my appreciation for the art of this record.
i hope that doesn’t intimidate anyone… it shouldn’t. and it’s not necessary… but you might just gain a little more perspective :)
either way, i hope you enjoy it.
