i started listen to toronto-native, andy shauf a bit back in the spring - but i must give credit to my good friend, josh for really getting me into his music. back in the august, when we recorded his episode for my podcast, josh went on and on about how much he loved andy’s music… we even went to the skyline restaurant that his album “neon skyline” revolves around! as soon as josh mentionned the phrase “concept album”, i was immediately persuaded into really diving into his work.

since then, i have spent quite a bit of time with each of andy’s albums, and i have to say, they all offer something quite different that could easily make me choose any one of them as my favourite. overall, his work feels so visceral and it’s so evident that every detail of each song is intentional and very well thought-out.

if i had to choose just one album as my favourite, “the party” would have to be it. it is one of his concept albums, and oh baby don’t you know how i love that! there is a very melancholic feeling that is carried throughout, which complement his somber, throaty vocals. the playful orchestral instruments that are used to carry a common theme throughout the songs offer a really interesting juxtaposition to this vibe that create a really unique sound. it really does feel like a party, just past 2 a.m., when everyone’s stoned in the basement.

i wish my words could do justice to this. just check it out.
